Cute Affectionate Monkeys

The crested black macaques (or maacs) are fascinating creatures, living exclusively in the rich forests of Northern Sulawesi. Their habitat is significantly shaped by the monsoon, which brings torrential rains for months, creating an environment that influences their behaviors.

From a young age, these macaques must master essential skills, such as climbing, and learn the intricate social etiquette that governs their troop. One of the most important social behaviors is lip smacking, a gesture that requests a hug and indicates a desire for friendship. Blowing kisses and sharing cuddles are common and extend beyond close family members, involving anyone in the troop. This behavior makes crested black macaques some of the most affectionate monkeys on the planet.

Their affectionate nature is partly due to the abundant resources brought by the monsoon. The forest offers a banquet of over 100 varieties of fruit, ensuring there is more than enough for everyone. With no need to fight over food, the macaques can focus on building friendships and exploring their forest home.

Occasionally, the monkeys exhibit behaviors that seem almost human, such as showing sensitivity and care towards a tiny casualty on the forest floor. This caring nature is a testament to the impact of their bountiful environment on their character, allowing them to live a life enriched by the monsoon’s gifts.
